the 20s and 30s

From prohibition, to the Harlem Renaissance, to The Great Gatsby and the Great Depression, many of these historical events influenced fashion. With women gaining more independence, it was reflected in their clothing and activity. Many women sported silk gowns on occasion, shorter hemlines for dancing, all adorned with beads, glitter, or sequins.

a brief historical context

Historically, the 1920s and 30s were a very eventful time period. A lot of the things that made America, America were born in the 20s and 30s, like the radio, art deco styles, and the SAT. Even the ways we are able to interact with the world changed: women got the right to vote with the passage of the 19th amendment. Insulin was first used to treat diabetes, and, tragically, the Great Depression took place. The Great Depression began in 1929 when the stock market crashed. As a result, US industrial production dropped 47%, and the unemployment rate surged to over 20%. Although it began in The US, the rest of the world was greatly affected. The Great Depression caused citizens to receive lower incomes, lose their jobs, money, houses, and social lives.
